If repairing leather furniture is tricky, cleaning leather furniture can be a nightmare, especially for the novice. The slightest mistake can sometimes ruin your furniture for good. However, cleaning your furniture doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, it can be easy if you follow the proper steps to not just clean but restore and enhance your furniture so it keeps looking brand new.

The best thing to use to clean leather is often moisturizng soap. The more free of oils, the more natural the soap is, the better your leather will be after you’ve used the soap. Remember, always test a small area of the furniture piece in question, preferably in a place that doesn’t show, before washing the whole piece. Using a wet washcloth, soap up the washcloth by pouring a small amount of the moisturizing soap and rubbing it into the cloth. Then, take the washcloth and gently rub the leather with it, being careful not to wet it too much as this could damage the leather, especially if it is high-quality leather.  Once the leather has been washed, dry it with an absorbent towel.

Do not forget that leather sofa furniture and leather living room furniture might have different cleaning methods than the one used here. When cleaning leather bedroom furniture, remove the sheets and mattress first before applying any cleaning solution to the leather.

After you’ve cleaned the leather, you can polish it to give it a shiny, new look. There are many leather polishing kits available depending on the kind and the color of your leather. Many leather owners like to polish their furniture because of the beautiful sheen the polish gives their pieces. Be careful, though, as using the polish incorrectly can leave streaks on the leather.

A good tip to make sure your leather stays in good shape is make sure you keep it far from any heat sources in the house, like a fireplace, forced-air heating register, etc. At least two feet away at a minimum. Also, keep it out of direct sunlight as the sunlight will cause the leather to dry out and crack.

If you have dyed leather or suede, consider calling in a professional for stains. Suede is hard to clean stains out of on your own without prior experience. Also, a professional will have special tricks he’s picked up to help keep your leather looking brand new and in top condition.

Cleaning your leather furniture doesn’t have to be a hard job. If you know what you’re doing, it can be very easy and painless. The important thing is to respect your leather no matter what shape it’s in. Leather is a valuable material no matter what shape it’s in. Keeping it spick and span helps preserve that value for the long run.
